2014-2015 – Jaffna and Kilinochchi
in partnership with Terre des hommes
Sahana Sri Lanka and Terre des hommes entered into a one-year partnership in April 2014 to carry out a project that aims to support 20 female headed households in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, to decrease their level of vulnerability by starting an alternative livelihood or sustaining their existing livelihood. While Terre des hommes is responsible for the implementation, the monitoring and the successful completion of the project, Sahana Sri Lanka is funding it.
Beneficiaries are all female headed household either war widows, women who intend to migrate and/or returnee migrant with unstable sources of income. Large families or households with a disabled child are prioritized.
In order to support the beneficiaries in starting an alternate or expanding their existing livelihood, Terre des hommes work with them to set up a plan, provide them with material support, vocational training opportunities and/or linking them with service providers.
The project is expected to reduce the vulnerability of these women by providing them a stabilized source of income, thus reducing the vulnerability of their children as well.
“Support from Sahana Sri Lanka allowed Terre des hommes to help particularly vulnerable female headed households in a way that would not otherwise have been possible. The integration of livelihood support into our work provided the opportunity to identify and respond to individuals whose acute vulnerability exposed them to the dangers of exploitation. The project proves that at the individual level a small intervention can contribute to significant outcomes”
